various meetings and events that are hosted, sponsored or supported by the
Houston Storytellers Guild.
Monthly -Story Swap
Swap stories,
listen, and enjoy.
3rd Thursdays of each month
6:30 pm social and begin Tale Swap at 7 pm
At the Montrose Library, 4100 Montrose
Blvd.
Guests are always welcome and there is never a charge.
These gatherings are
open to anyone interested in listening to or telling stories. The meetings
sometimes feature special presenters and programs. This a barrel
of fun and a good place to practice your stories.

Geckos Gathering
Jay Stailey, co-producer of the River Café Story Nights in the latter days
of the last century, and Brian Herod, producer of Stories from the Edge at
Helios, in the early days of this century, have joined creative forces to
produce a new arena in which to tell and listen to stories.
In the spirit of those Geckos Gathering, a unique
Houston venue coupled with a special story theme will be announced. Those
interested in telling stories to the theme can contact Jay and Brian by
e-mail and will be put on the program for the coming month. A new venue and
theme will be announced at each Geckos Gathering.
Held periodically, dates to be announced as
plans are firmed up.

Liars' Contest or
Showcase
This is the most
rip roarin', knee slappin', side-bustin', laughin' out loud, outrageous
contest of wit, imagination, hyperbole, and prevaricatin' skill in the
world. The Houston Liars' Contest has achieved an
affectionate notoriety that is unrivaled by any other similar event
anywhere. In April of 2008 at our 20th contest we had wild and
hilarious stories from,
Linda Befeld, Scott Bumgardner, Oel
Castner, Darlene Dufour,
Alice Evergreen,
Dan Gibson, Donna Ingham, and
Mike Morrow. A perennial favorite won, Donna Ingham with Darlene and
Mike trailing closely behind.

solid gold trophy.
Emphasis is on fun farfetched

Turkey
Tales Dinner
We gather to hear
shaggy dog stories, groaners, and bad puns over a catered meal. Funds from
this event support HSG programs.
Stand by for future dates. Tickets required.

Tellabration
November just
before Thanksgiving, we join in spirit and story with storytellers around
the world to participate in Tellebration, "The International Night of
Storytelling". This is an annual event, keep an eye out
for next years event.

Sally
Bates Goodroe loves telling stories to all ages. Her specialties include
participation stories, stories from the British Isles, Texas
ghost stories, and world folktales. She often performs with her
husband, folksinger & banjo player, David Goodroe. In 1997, she won the
prestigious John Henry Faulk award presented by the Tejas Storytelling
Association for service to the art of storytelling in the South West region.
Learn to tell your stories.
In this workshop, tellers will learn the following skills:
how to find
stories
basic techniques for learning tales
how to add detail and imagery
practice in telling a short story
Please bring your lunch and a
drink. The workshop will end with a short lunch concert demonstrating
different types of stories.
This workshop is free and open
to the anyone who would like to learn how to tell a story.

The Guild
occasionally hosts a beginner's storytelling workshop. In addition,
storytellers present special topics in intermediate and advanced workshops
