The Grand Story Fest

September 10 & 11, 2004

The Grand 1894 Opera House, Galveston

A Houston Storytellers Guild Production

Well friends it has come and gone, but we sure did pass a mighty good time.  The liars, lied and made the crowd laugh.  Workshops were great learning and sharing experiences.  The Children's Concert with Nancy Burks Worcester was absolutely amazing.  How do they throw their voices like that?  Linda Befeld led a fine group of our own tellers in a memorable tribute to Heroes and 9-11.  Last but not least were the wonderful, heart grabbing performances of our featured tellers, Tim Tingle, Jeannine Pasini Beekman, and De Cee Cornish at the Grand Patchwork Concert.  All of this offered in the finest performance hall this side of heaven.  They sure had fine folk there to help us.

If you missed this one, you missed one of the best events around.

Below is what was offered!  See y'all next time.

Scott H. Bumgardner, President

Our purpose is to enable participants to create written and oral performance pieces from material gathered by an oral interview. We will discuss selecting interview subjects, locating these subjects, and scheduling an interview. Tingle will share highlights from interviews of the past fifteen years and perform two stories gathered from these interviews

II.  with Nancy Burks Worscester – Putting the Fun In Your Presentations

A workshop designed to impart the basics of audience control,  getting the listeners on your side,  what makes children laugh at different ages, how to choose appropriate stories, getting the laugh without stooping for it.   Also includes the basics of choosing a sound system, ways to put together an inexpensive and effective background,  how to conduct yourself in school situations, etc.  Sort of a nuts and bolts for beginners.

10:45 am-12:15 pm    Workshops  (1 1/2 hours each, choose one)

III. with De Cee Cornish –Creating the Imaginary Story

De Cee shares his technique to spark the imagination of students, at all levels.  Physical Activities, story starters, and more.

IV.  with Jeannine Pasini Beekman – Technique is Not a Four Letter Word
Storytellers sometimes fear that TECHNIQUE will taint their work, making it impure and artificial. In reality, lack of technique can make our telling confusing, unintelligible and just plain boring. In this session, Jeannine will draw upon her thirty-five years of performance and twenty-five years of storytelling experience to help participants understand that we can all benefit from knowledge of basic stage techniques. Through lecture/demonstration and discussion, we will examine our own performance philosophy and begin to explore practical ways to employ movement,  voice and characterization so that others may more easily hear the stories that we tell.
